The January Fast

“Fasting for 21 days!!”

I couldn’t even fathom how someone thought that would be a great idea. Twenty-one days is a loooong time! Especially for someone who’s never fasted in her life. Why fast for twenty-one days when one day would suffice? 

My initial reaction to doing a January fast was hesitation. Other than a closer relationship with God, I didn’t see the benefits of a fast that lasted longer than a couple of days. Never have I been so wrong. Fasting turned out to be a refreshing, revitalizing experience. In addition, I learned a lot about myself especially how I dealt with stress. 

It also transformed me mentally while giving my soul a much-needed detox. And the craziest part is that the benefits lasted way longer than I imagined. I was more patient and understanding…more calm…more peaceful after having gone through the fast than I was before. And that feeling stayed with me for several months. So much so that a 21-day January fast became a yearly tradition and I’ve never been disappointed. 

After all the change that happened last year, now more than ever I need a fresh perspective…a spiritual realignment. And a 21-day fast is just what my soul is craving.
