Treasuring Life

Life gets pretty hectic in December. It feels like I’m just running from one activity to the next without taking a break. This year I’ve decided not to be a victim of the craziness. Instead, I’m choosing to make time to treasure life.

The main way I do this is by slowing down (even if it’s in the middle of the hectic) and capturing the perfect moments that come my way. Those subtle, unassuming and sometimes quick moments that have a tendency to slip by unnoticed. Yet it’s the things we think about and miss the most when something tragic happens.  It’s the small mundane details we take for granted. All the quirks that make us unique and memorable. But we can capture them easily, if we train ourselves to look for them.

It’s moments like:

  • when my son Caleb, plants himself in front of the Christmas tree admiring the lights wearing his Santa hat (he can’t seem to admire the lights without it)
  • or his big hugs and boisterous laughter
  • or the way he smiles and puffs his chest out when he’s proud of his accomplishments
  • or how animated he gets when he watches a video

It’s actually more a mindset than anything else. It’s being intentionally grateful for life and viewing it through a lens of thankfulness even if everything isn’t going according to plan.

In fact, nothing went according to plan for one of my most treasured moments. But I’m very grateful I paused to savor it. Had I not, it would’ve slipped away leaving me with regrets. Read more about that time here.
