Unending Storms

There’s this misconception floating around the Christian universe that with God on our side life will always be filled with bright, beautiful, sunny days. And if rain clouds ever appear on the horizon, they are temporary and leave relatively quickly. Well, it’s not true. Sometimes storm season lasts for years.

As someone who loves a good storm, even I would grow tired of it if it went on for years. Unending storms test our character and our faith. The challenging part of weathering them is knowing God has the potential to change circumstances, something we’ve seen Him do countless times.

The Bible is filled with His miraculous interventions from Genesis through Revelations. He’s opened the eyes of the blind man, raised people from the dead, calmed stormy seas and healed countless sick. He even made the sun stand still. These are just a few of the stories, there are way too many to share in this post.

The miracles don’t stop with the Bible. His power’s still working today. He healed a woman from cancer who was only given a 30% chance of survival. He blessed a company with success when they were on the brink of shutting down. He delivered milk and bread to an orphanage when they had nothing to eat. He made opportunities that didn’t exist. He provided support when there was none. He healed people doctors said were beyond hope and so on. Again, there are way too many stories to list.

Hearing these stories about the supernatural work of God in other people’s lives brings mixed emotions. On one hand, we’re happy for those people and awe-struck at the wonder-working power of God. On the other, we feel deflated because our circumstances remain unchanged and we wonder when it will be our turn.

What I’ve learned

I wish I had a device to transport people out of unending storms, but I don’t. The only way to get over it is by going through it. Unfortunately, there are no shortcuts. Embrace the difficult season just as the good season was welcomed. Chose to live each day with gratitude and focus on the positive. Remember that having God on our side means we never have to fear the future. Our hope comes from Him and not our circumstances.
