The goop bubbling away in the pot looked like a science experiment gone wrong. How it was going to turn into a cake, still puzzled me and made me question my decision to make this recipe in the first place. But it was unlike ANY cake recipe I’ve ever made before. Would it actually work? I had no idea. I was instructed to set aside doubts and trust the process.
Easier said than done! I almost didn’t make it. I almost gave up on the process when I had to add baking soda to the wet ingredients. Alarm bells were going off in my head. Clusters of baking soda floating around undissolved in the liquid mixture assaulted my eyes. Visions of people biting into clumps of baking soda while eating the cake tormented my mind. It made no sense! Why would anyone add baking soda to the liquid’s? I wanted to ignore the instructions and add the baking soda to the dry mixture anyway. But then I remembered I was supposed to trust the process, not take matters into my own hands.
I took a deep breath, threw caution to the wind, and dumped the baking soda in with the liquids. Then I mixed and poured the entire concoction into my ungreased cake pan and placed it in the oven. Having no idea how it will turn out. But I’ve decided to trust the process. I’m going to believe that when the timer rings, I will have a delicious cake.
That’s what it means to trust the process. It’s not knowing how it’s going to turn out, but doing our part and believing everything will turn out in the end. It’s a lot like faith. The definition of faith is trusting God’s process. It means continuing to pray even if we’ve been praying for the same issue for decades. It means continuing to hold on to hope, even if things aren’t working out the way we planned. It means continuing to do good and make the right choices. Even if we’re tired and weary, we’re going to trust God’s process. He knows what He’s doing and in the end it will all work out, even if we don’t know how.
The mélange that I threw into the oven turned into a delicious cake. I would never have known that had I not trusted the process.
So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up. Gal 6:9.
